Happy Valenti-ne's Day.

Ever since I was fourteen years old when Full Frontal Feminism came out, I have become a very big Valenti fan. Having a proud feminist for a sister, she gave me the book once she finished reading it multiple times--only a week after it came out. I adored it. It was written in a language that my sister and I understood: smart, yet smart-alecky. It was a book I needed to inspire me to get out of such a bad place in my life; it was one I couldn't escape for the time being, so I read instead and educated myself. Soon after reading that book, I went on to deeper literature and learning more about Valenti's work, including The Purity Myth.

I think Valenti's approach to educating people about feminism is the right way to go, especially with young adults and any under-educated people on the topic. It has inspired me to think of ways to teach people on a more focused area of study: transgender people. In order to get people to understand, one must speak their "language:" relaxed, very informal, borderline crude, and in-their-face. Nothing's better than learning about something with a personal, real-life situation. Therefore, it makes sense to me to actually live the life of a person who identifies as transgender. Of course, there would have to be certain rules I would have to give myself in order to make this an accurate study, but I think it would be a beneficial research project. More on the research paper soon.

Back to Valenti's book, in chapter 1, she really begins the book "with a bang." She does not mess around with clearly stating the problem with society and why feminism is perceived to be such a bad thing. She doesn't beat around the bush and pretend everything's okay, which is essential. In fact, when I read her work, it sounded like the way I would talk to my own friends about the topic. Just by simply putting in parenthesis that "trust me, getting off your ass can be more fun than you think" really lightens the mood and keeps the reader completely interested. I strive to keep such a luster in my writings.

More people need to learn from her writing style. More people also need to read this book.
