This post is relevant to Gender and Conflict on a much more personal level than I've ever posted about before. In remembrance of my niece, I would like to use this blog post to show firsthand gender issues she faced about herself. Earlier this year, Kat told me she was thinking about being a boy (her girlfriend told me this weekend that she was finally set on it and wanted to get the surgery done one day. Also, one day, I would like to start referring to her as a he and as Skylar, the name she chose...of course, only with certain people who really understood her, but we're not at that point yet since it's still new to me and will take some adjusting). Anyway, one day, she sent me these videos to show me an argument between her and her mother about the clothes she wears. It breaks my heart even more into pieces watching it now. All I ask is that you click play, listen (there's not really much to see because she was secretly recording this argument), and think about how hurt Kat must've felt to hear this from her mom. All she wanted was love and acceptance. Rest in peace, dude. **The second video shows a few seconds of the first video, so bare with hearing part of it twice, please.**
